  1. NEWTAB("Historical Background")
  2. The Norwegian Campaign was a military campaign that was fought in Norway during the Second World War between the Allies and Germany, after the latter's invasion of the country.
  3. In April 1940, the United Kingdom and France came to Norway's aid with an expeditionary force. Despite moderate success in the northern parts of Norway, Germany's invasion of France in May 1940 eventually compelled the Allies to withdraw and the Norwegian government to seek exile in London.
  4. The campaign subsequently ended with the occupation of Norway by Germany, and the continued fighting of exiled Norwegian forces from abroad.
  5. The conflict occurred between 9 April and 10 June 1940, the 62 days of fighting making Norway the nation that withstood a German invasion for the longest period of time, aside from the Soviet Union.
  6. <br/><br/>The Norwegian campaign was the first time that British forces clashed on the ground with the Germans.
  7. The German troops were made up almost entirely of infantry divisions, with some Paratroopers, and limited armoured support. British forces were able to land successfuly in several places in Norway in response.
  8. The Germans made good use of the Luftwaffe however, using aircraft to drop paratroopers behind allied lines and bombing major concentrations of allied forces.
  9. ENDTAB;
  10.
  11. NEWTAB("I. Situation:")
  12. Germany has invaded Denmark and Norway, Denmark has already fallen and the Norwegian military, ill equipped and not properly mobilised when the conflict began, is about to collapse.
  13. To prevent the Germans seizing Norway and the resources vital to the German war effort that it holds British, French and Polish forces have been deployed to Norway to aid in its defence.
  14. <br/><br/>Along with a large number air and naval forces, 3 land task forces have been dispatched to Norway.
  15. Rupertforce will land at Narvik in northern Norway, Mauriceforce will land at Namos in central Norway and Sickleforce, of which our unit, A Coy, 1/5th (Derbyshire) Battalion is a part, landed at Andalsnes in southern Norway.
  16. <br/><br/>Sickleforce has been tasked with advancing south to prop up failing Norwegian defence lines as the Germans push north from Oslo.  Our Company is at the front of the advance, and we have made good process, nearly reaching the town of Lillehammer.
  17. Norwegian forces in this area have been desperately trying to use the nearby river as a natural barrier on which to establish a defensive line.
  18. B and C companies has been detached to reinforce the remnants of the Norwegian 3rd Dragoon regiment, who hold two bridges, codenamed Ace and Beer, to our south west.
  19. <br/><br/>According to reports from local Norwegian militia, the bridge to our South east, codename Edward, has been successfully barricaded and mined, rendering it unusable to the Germans.
  20. Unfortunately to bridges to our south, Charlie and Don, were undefended by Norwegian Forces, and the advancing German 163rd Infantry Division has rushed forward it's frontal elements to seize them. We must take these bridges back at all costs.
  21. ENDTAB;
  22.
  23. NEWTAB("A. Enemy Forces:")
  24. Composition<br/><br/>It is believed that the Germans are present in reinforced platoon strength at each of the two bridges.
  25. When the Germans learned about the arrival of British troops they rushed what they could in what few vehicles the 163rd had to the area.
  26. <br/><br/>We suspect German forces in the area consist of at least 2 rifle platoons along with elements from the 163rds Division's recce element, likely consisting of additional infantry, along with a couple of trucks or half tracks with mounted machineguns.
  27. Additional motorcycle troops are also possible. <br/><br/>The Luftwaffe is also very active in this area, and there have been numerous strikes against Norwegian positions by both dive bombers and fighters.
  28. <br/><br/>Disposition<br/><br/>German forces are likely arrayed in defensive positions on both sides of the river around the two bridges.
  29. They have had a couple of hours to dig shell scrapes, so we can expect dug in MG34s with good fields of fire on both bridges.
  30. <br/><br/>It is likely they have scout units and patrols north of the river in the hills to give prior warning of our approach. It has also been reported by locals that they have been seizing all boats along the river, although apperently there are possibly some boats left untouched, though we have no intelligence on where on the river these may be.
  31. <br/><br/>Capabilities<br/><br/>Moderate to high. German forces are present in numbers around the two bridges.
  32. German rifle platoons have 3 MG34s per platoon, and along with additional machine guns carried by the recce detachment, we can expect that each bridge may have 3 to 4 machine guns defending it.
  33. German forces are also likely to call in Luftwaffe airstrikes on any major Allied forces they spot as well.
  34. <br/><br/>Fortunately, due to German Infantry divisions general lack of motorization, the Germans are unlikely to be reinforced within the next few hours.
  35. Due to their limited number of vehicles it is unlikely they have brought heavier equipment such as mortars or AT guns with them. Their remaining forces are having to move by foot and their heavy equipment is horse drawn.
  36. ENDTAB;

  38. NEWTAB("B. Friendly Forces:")
  39. Higher unit's mission<br/><br/>Establish a defensive line along the river and block the further advance of German Forces.
  40. <br/><br/>Composition<br/><br/>A Coy, 1/5th (Derbyshire) Battalion formed up at the markers.
  41. <br/><br/>Detachments<br/><br/> Elements of 1st platoon have been left behind to secure the railway line to our North, in order to bring up reinforcements
  42. <br/><br/>Attachments<br/><br/>Although not all our heavy equipment was offloaded when we moved out, what was available has been assigned to us.
  43. <br/><br/>2 trucks have been obtained from the civilian population, as have 2 Vicker's machinegun with extra ammunition between them. 1st Platoon, 1 section are still attached and have been provided an extra Bren Gun for AA defence. A Boys Anti Tank rifle team have also been attached. These are all under the direct control of the Company Commander. Further reinforcementsmay be brought forward if we take casulties

  75. NEWTAB("Intelligence on German units and doctrine:")
  76. German squads are reported to be thirteen strong, with three Squads per Platoon.  The Squad is made up of a leader armed with an MP38 submachine gun, an assistant and seven men, all of who are armed with rifles.
  77. The Squad is completed by a Light Machine Gun group of four men, armed with pistols and rifles and serving a single light machine gun.  Platoon HQ is nothing more than an officer and three messengers carrying a pistol and rifles respectively.
  78. The Light Mortar Section contained an NCO and two men, all armed with rifles and serving a single 5-cm light mortar.<br/><br/>German doctrine is focused around the machinegun as it is the majority of the firepower for the squad.
  79. The machinegun will be located in a key position with good fields of fire. Most of the rest of the men in the squad will be acting as security for the machinegun
  80. <br/><br/>German recce elements are a mixed bag sometimes being little more than a company of bicycle mounted infantry. Better equipped units have infantry mounted in trucks, halftracks and motorcycles with mounted machineguns.
  81. <br/><br/>German forces outside their Panzer divisions lack mechanization or motorisation.
  82. Infantry divisions still operate almost entirely on foot, with only a small motor pool, mostly devoted to the recce elements as noted above and with horses used to move most heavier equipment.
  83. ENDTAB;
  84.
  85. NEWTAB("How to operate as a 1940 British Infantry Company:")
  86. A 1940 British Infantry Company is a fairly similar to British units in the 60s, 70s and 80s that players at UO are used to, just with lower tech. Each company has 3 platoons. Each platoon has 3 8 men sections.
  87. A section has a commander with a Thompson, a 2IC, 4 rifleman and a gun group consisting of a Bren gunner and his assistant. The Bren Gun is a magazine fed light machinegun.
  88. Although the assist carries a lot of the spare ammo, the rest of the section will carry ammunition for it as well.
  89. <br/><br/>In combat the gun group will generally be used to fix and pin down the enemy and then an assault group of rifleman will attack the enemy position.
  90. Only the section commanders and the platoon sergeant have a submachine gun, as they were rare for the British at this early stage of the war. Thousands had to be bought from the Americans and it took time for their to be enough to issue them on a wide scale.
  91. Each platoon also has a 2 inch mortar, this is generally used in a direct role, deployed immediately behind the platoon and is directed onto targets by the platoon commander.
  92. <br/><br/>Each company has two trucks for transport and to carry spare equipment in.
  93. The British army had a high degree of mechanisation, unlike most other militaries such as the Germans who still relied on horses for up to 90% of their transport.
  94. The trucks and carriers allow troops to be moved quickly from one point or another or for scouts to move out in front of the main force.
  95. Nonetheless a large part of the company will still have to move on foot due to the limited number of vehicles (and their vulnerability to air attack).
  96. ENDTAB;
  97.
  98. NEWTAB("Crew Served Weapons:")
  99. This mission contains 4 crew served weapons, two mortars and 2 Vickers machineguns. Due to my laziness and to prevent any issues the Vickers will start assembled in front of their respective crews, you will have to disassemble them to move them, although they can be loaded on to the trucks assembled. Each gun has 2000 rounds per gun. The ammunition is carried with the gun, even when disassembled. The mortars are the standard commando mortar from our regular mod pack.
  100. ENDTAB
  101.
  102. NEWTAB("Respawn")
  103. Every player has 1 respawn ticket, you will respawn at the rally point marker. One of the roles of the Coy Sgt Major is to organise these reinforcements.
  104. ENDTAB
  105.
  106. NEWTAB("Use of enemy weapons and vehicles")
  107. Use of enemy weapons and vehicles is allowed, subject to any restrictions from the mission CO. In general it is historically accurate for all sides in WW2 to obtain certain weapons from enemy forces, eg submachineguns, due to shortages, and common ammo types, eg 9mm. I would recommend picking up any SMGs you find, although the German K98K is worse than the Lee Enfield.
  108. ENDTAB
  109.
  110. NEWTAB("WW2 FAQs")
  111. Where's my radio?<br/>It's 1940, radios are for Company level and above. Be glad you aren't Soviet, who were lucky if they had one radio per battalion.
  112. <br/><br/>If this is Norway, where are the fjords?<br/>The Germans have bombed them.
  113. <br/><br/>This piece of equipment is not 100% historically accurate! <br/>For the most part this orbat, and the situation is thoroughly researched and accurate, down to the units that were fighting near Lillehammmer.
  114. However as always in arma, I have had to make do with what is available in the modpack, hence why there are some small anachronisms eg modern commando mortars standing in for the British 2 inch, or type 100 SMGs standing in for MP28s and MP35s.
  115. ENDTAB
  116.
  117. NEWTAB("Mission notes:")
  118. Mission by Kingslayer with a lot of help from James, which is much appreciated<br/><br/>Modules used, ACE medical system, bolt action animations, hand signals, armour penetration additional effects, MMG prone animations, overpressure, weapon resting,
  119. <br/><br/>To win kill 85% of the overall German force. Defeat will occur if you lose 60% of your force. 2 hour 30 minute time limit.
  120. <br/><br/>It is against mission intent to try and use the other bridges and besides they have all been rendered impassable as well.
  121. <br/>It is also against mission intent to try and swim across the river, unless you have dropped all backbacks, webbing and primary weapons, as it would be impossible when heavily laden with equipment. You can swim across wearing only your uniform, any items in the uniform, and a pistol.
  122. <br/><br/>Picking up and using enemy weapons:
  123. <br/>Many countries, such as Britain, the Soviet Union and even the Germans were massively under-equipped.
  124. Unlike modern militaries where picking up enemy weapons is strongly discouraged, troops in WW2 frequently picked up enemy weapons to supplement their stocks.
  125. In part this was aided by the fact both sides often used the same ammunition for many of their weapon systems allowing for easy resupply.
  126. <br/><br/>As in real life though, the platoon and company commanders have final say on whether enemy weapons can be appropriated.

  1. player createDiaryRecord ["Diary",["Historical background","The Norwegian Campaign was a military campaign that was fought in Norway during the Second World War between the Allies and Germany, after the latter's invasion of the country. In April 1940, the United Kingdom and France came to Norway's aid with an expeditionary force. Despite moderate success in the northern parts of Norway, Germany's invasion of France in May 1940 eventually compelled the Allies to withdraw and the Norwegian government to seek exile in London. The campaign subsequently ended with the occupation of Norway by Germany, and the continued fighting of exiled Norwegian forces from abroad. The conflict occurred between 9 April and 10 June 1940, the 62 days of fighting making Norway the nation that withstood a German invasion for the longest period of time, aside from the Soviet Union.<br/><br/>The Norwegian campaign was the first time that British forces clashed on the ground with the Germans. The German troops were made up almost entirely of infantry divisions with little in the way of mechanisation meaning they moved much slower than the British forces. The Germans made good use of the Luftwaffe however, using aircraft to drop paratroopers behind allied lines and bombing major concentrations of allied forces. <br/>"]];

If you are Norwegian, well your gear just sucks. <br/><br/>Where's my radio?<br/><br/>It's 1940, radios are for company level and above. Be glad you aren't Soviet, who were lucky if they had one radio per battalion. <br/><br/>If this is Norway, where are the fjords?<br/><br/>The Germans have bombed them. <br/><br/>This piece of equipment is not 100% historically accurate! <br/><br/>For the most part this orbat is as accurate as I could be. There is surprisingly little information on early war Fallschirmjäger, but I have pieced together what I can. Equipment is what is available in the modpack, but is mostly accurate. The MP40 stands in for its immediate and almost identical predecessor, the MP38.<br/><br/>As for the Norwegians their main rifle, the Krag Jorgensen, is also not in the mod pack. I have improvised with Springfields. The Vickers guns represent the Colt M/29, Norway's ww2 machinegun, which is very similar both in appearance and use to the Vickers. <br/><br/>I have tried to use older looking civilian cars and trucks. The Germans pressed into service a lot of civilian vehicles during their invasion of Normandy and I wanted this to be a part of the mission. <br/>"]];
  4. player createDiaryRecord ["Diary",["Picking up and using enemy weapons + vehicles","Many countries, such as Britain, the Soviet Union and even the Germans were massively underequipped. Unlike modern militaries where picking up enemy weapons is strongly discouraged, troops in WW2 frequently picked up enemy weapons to supplement their stocks. In part this was aided by the fact both sides often used the same ammunition for many of their weapon systems allowing for easy resupply. <br/><br/>As in real life though, the platoon and company commanders have final say on whether enemy weapons can be appropriated. <br/><br/>Use of civilian vehicles is encouraged as is historically accurate, German forces, particularly paratroopers had to press into service Norwegian trucks and cars to make up for their lack of transport. <br/>"]];
  5. player createDiaryRecord ["Diary",["Crew served weapons","This mission contains several crew served machineguns. They start assembled.  <br/><br/>The Vickers machinegun and the tripod mounted MG34 are both treated as vehicles by the game, and must be reloaded from the vehicle ammo crate. This can be loaed on to a truck for transport. The guns can be disassembledusing the ace interact keys and scroll wheel to be moved around. <br/><br/>If a assembled crew served weapon is near a suitable vehicle it can be loaded and unloaded into the cargo also by use of the ace iteract key. This is particularly useful for carrying out  quick ambushes, the machinegun can be quickly unloaded, fired at the enemy, then packed up and driven off again very quickly. <br/>"]];
  6. player createDiaryRecord ["Diary",["Appendix A How to operate as a 1940 Fallschirmjäger Company","This orbat is designed to represent a early war German parachute company, or in this case, due to player count, a small part of it. <br/><br/>Even at this early stage of the war Fallschirmjäger were issued far more automatic weapons than regular forces. This was because they were expected to be dropped behind enemy lines and fight without being reinforced. This is emphasised by each rifle squad having 2 machine gunners along with greater numbers of MP38s. the predecessor to the MP40.  <br/><br/>The Machine Gun squad had only 1 machinegun per squad, but this was a heavier tripod  mounted version. <br/><br/>German doctrine places great emphasis on the machinegun, it is the majority of the firepower in the squad. The other members of the squad are their primarily to assist with the machinegun, carry ammo and provide security. In battle the Germans will attempt to move their machineguns into the most advantageous position and win the firefight with overwhelming firepower. Once the enemy has been thoroughly suppressed the rest of the squad can assault what is left of the enemy. <br/><br/>It is important to note that because of German doctrine and the limitation of German parachutes, most Fallschirmjäger dropped without weapons, these were dropped in containers. Therefore you must hurry to organise yourself on the ground as many of you will be unarmed. This, historically, lead to several operations by the Fallschirmjäger ending in disaster.<br/>"]];
