Armored Infantry Battalion, 1943-1945r.

Struktury przedstawione poniżej oparte są na oficjalnych T/O&E z lat 1943-1945. Należy pamiętać że z powodu niedoborów kadrowych, strat czy ogólnego chaosu nie miały one stuprocentowego przełożenia na rzeczywistą organizację aktywnych w tym czasie jednostek zarówno pod względem stanu osobowego jak i sprzętu.

ARTYKUŁ W BUDOWIE. PROSZĘ O CIERPLIWOŚĆ I WYROZUMIAŁOŚĆ

1. Wprowadzenie

Stany Zjednoczone zaczęły tworzyć pierwsze dywizje pancerne w oparciu o 7. Brygadę Kawalerii Zmechanizowanej w Lipcu 1940r. na ponad rok przed przystąpieniem do wojny. W początkowej fazie wdrażania jednostek pancernych bazowano na bogatej tradycji amerykańskiej kawalerii oraz doświadczeniach zaobserwowanych podczas Hiszpańskiej wojny domowej i wojny w Europie, w szczególności użycia jednostek pancernych przez III Rzeszę w Polsce oraz we Francji. W celu uzupełnienia słabych stron czołgów do dywizji dodano również piechotę i artylerię.

W latach 1940-1942 na dywizję pancerną składały się 2 pułki lekkich czołgów oraz 1 pułk ciężkich (w rzeczywistości średnich) czołgów, pułk artylerii, pułk piechoty oraz batalion rozpoznania uzupełnione przez batalion inżynieryjny oraz batalion artylerii polowej - w sumie prawie 13 tysięcy osób. Warto w tym miejscu wspomnieć o roli wczesnych dywizji pancernych: nie były one tworzone z myślą o regularnej walce z wrogimi czołgami, a raczej bazowały na dotychczasowych zadaniach jednostek kawalerii - działania na tyłach zgrupowań wroga i nękania piechoty.

Odznaka 1st Armored Division - trzy kolory symbolizują połączenie kawalerii (żółty) , piechoty (niebieski) i artylerii (czerwony).

Symulacja manewrów jednostek pancernych w lecie 1941r. w Louisianie, Karolinie Płn. i Karolinie Płd. pokazała, że dywizjom pancernym brakowało piechoty oraz artylerii których dałoby się używać w elastyczny sposób w połączeniu z czołgami. Ponadto, w Sierpniu 1941r. Gen. Marshall Jacob Devers zajął miejsce Mjr. General Adny Chaffeeego, zażartego zwolennika kawalerii jako dowódcy US Armored Force. W przeciwieństwie o swojego poprzednika, Devers widział konieczność dostosowania przestarzałych jak na dane czasy wojsk pancernych. Oprócz zmian w koncepcji użycia czołgów przebudowie poddano dywizje pancerne. Zdecentralizowano HQ wydzielając z niego trzy tzw. Combat Commands: CCA, CCB oraz rezerwowe CCR które w zależności od sytuacji mogły koordynować działania mieszanych oddziałów różnej wielkości, dostosowanych liczebnością do zadania. Zmiany w strukturze dywizji pancernej z Sierpnia 1943r. można krótko podsumować jako rozbicie dużych elementów na mniejsze, zwiększenie ilości piechoty zmechanizowanej i artylerii oraz odwrócenie proporcji czołgów lekkich i średnich na korzyść tych drugich. Zwiększono też ilość niszczycieli czołgów.

Pomimo pozytywnego przyjęcia zmian przez dowództwo Armii potrzeba było czasu na ich wprowadzenie w już działających dywizjach - czasu, którego zabrakło przed Czerwcem 1944r. i inwazją Aliantów w Normandii. Zdecydowano się w tym przypadku na kompromis: 1.- 2.- oraz 3. Dywizja Pancerna zostały pozostawione bez ingerencji w ich strukturę (oprócz stopniowej wymiany pojazdów, w tym czołgów na nowsze). Z czasem oficjalnie zaczęto określać je mianem Ciężkich Dywizji Pancernych. Wszystkie inne dywizje pancerne zostały jednak tworzone w oparciu o nową organizację.

Ten artykuł dotyczy piechoty zmechanizowanej w ramach nowszych (zwykłych) dywizji pancernych.

2. Armored Infantry Battalion jako część Armored Division

W skład US Armored Division wchodziły trzy niezależne bataliony piechoty. Najpopularniejszą praktyką było przydzielenie po jednym batalionie piechoty do każdego Combat Command, w ramach którego współpracowała ona z jednostkami pancernymi oraz artylerią polową wspomagając natarcia oraz stanowiąc trzon obrony. Naturalnie, zdażały się przypadki, gdy do wykonania specyficznego zadania używano dwóch batalionów na raz. Działając w duchu sił połączonych piechota zmechanizowana ściśle współpracowały z czołgami uzupełniajac ich słabe strony.

2. Zadania

Z powodu zastosowania Combat Commands oraz elastycznej natury działań aż do Listopada 1944r. nie opublikowano oficjalnych Field Manuali dla piechoty zmechanizowanej. W większości przypadków elementy pancerne i zmechanizowane były ze sobą łączone na szczeblu plutonu lub kompanii.

Do typowych zadań piechoty zmechanizowanej należały:

Wspieranie natarcia czołgów i likwidacja pozostałej wrogiej piechoty.
Zajmowanie i utrzymywanie terenu zdobytego przez czołgi.
Zdobywanie pozycji wyjściowych dla natarcia czołgów.
Pokonywanie mostów, rzek i umocnień celem umożliwienia przejazdu czołgom i niszczycielom czołgów.
Atakowanie i bronienie obszarów zabudowanych.
Prowadzenie rozpoznania terenowego.
Zajmowanie pozycji przeciwnika posiadających zbyt dużą do użycia czołgów koncentrację środków przeciwpancernych.
Zabezpieczanie pozycji artylerii, czołgów i/lub niszczycieli czołgów.

W kwestii uzbrojenia należy pamiętać o tym, że im dłużej trwała kampania w Europie tym większe różnice pojawiały się między oficjalnymi spisami a faktycznym uzbrojeniem żołnierzy na froncie. Popularną praktyką było umieszczanie w ramach Rifle Squadu karabinów M1918 BAR - znalezionych lub "pozyskanych" z innych jednostek. Wyrzutnie ppanc. wożono w pojazdach i w zalezności od sytuacji przydzielano do wybranego żołnierza. W przeciwieństwie do podobnych formacji amerykańskiej piechoty z tego okresu w przypadku Armored Infantry mamy do czynienia ze stałym strzelcem wyborowym uzbrojonym w M1903A4 Spiengfield w ramach 1st Rifle Squad w każdym plutonie.

Praktyka noszenia M1911 przez medyków była mniej rozpowszechniona niż na Pacyfiku, jednak zdarzały się pojedyncze izolowane przypadki. Podczas walk w Zachodniej Europie zarówno Amerykanie jak i Niemcy generalnie przestrzegali postanowień Konwencji Genewskiej i często zdarzały się przerwy w walkach pozwalające ewakuować rannych na tyły - rzecz niespotykana na innych frontach. Co za tym idzie personel medyczny czuł się dużo bezpieczniej niż ich koledzy walczący na Pacyfiku i rzadziej decydowano się na pozyskiwanie pistoletu.

Od 1943r. zaczęto masową produkcję M3 Grease Gun oraz wdrażanie go do Armii. Warto pamiętać że nie zastąpił on M1A1 Thompson z dnia na dzień - zmiana odbywała się raczej na zasadzie powolnego wypierania M1A1 na rzecz M3 (potem M3A1).
